If you're a fan of This Is Us, then you know that Chrissy Metz can really sing but did you know that she once auditioned for American Idol? Before landing the role of Kate Pearson, Chrissy tried out for the reality singing competition in 2007 to be respected for her vocal abilities.

However, the experience was less-than-amazing for the brunette beauty, who revealed in her memoir This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today that she had to push back on producers who wanted her on the show for the wrong reasons.

"You know, I get it, they're trying to make stories and they're trying to invest the audience into these characters and I understand the whole scope of everything, especially [since] I was a talent agent," she told Entertainment Tonight. "So, I understand what they're doing. And I was like, 'Oh, I can sort of see that and I don't want to be that girl… Like, if you don't dig it, you don't like my voice, I'll just keep it moving."

The 37-year-old continued, "I didn't want to make ridiculous TV. I wanted to, you know, be respected as a singer." She sang the Dreamgirls hit "Heavy Heavy" for her audition, which never aired. Despite the bad experience, Chrissy went on to find success on the NBC drama, where she recently showed off her impressive pipes.

"I think [Kate’s] got a little soul in her. She likes some throwback, Motown stuff," she told TV Guide. "I know for me, I love every genre of music. I'm excited to see where they're going to go with it." And Chrissy's keeping her fingers crossed for a duet with her TV mom, Mandy Moore.

"I mean… Like Kate, I never really was encouraged to sing but always wanted to so," Chrissy added at Variety’s TV Summit. "It’s like my dreams are really coming true and to potentially sing with my [TV] mom Mandy Moore would be incredible. That would be incredible and I think music is such a beautiful art form and it’s so healing."
