Between twerking and seductively licking sledgehammers, it's not often we see Miley Cyrus' softer side.
But in probably one of her most candid and honest interviews to date, the singer opened up to Barbara Walters about her failed relationship to Liam Hemsworth, revealing she was too scared to leave him.
The 21-year-old sat down with the veteran journalist for ABC's Barbara Walters Present The 10 Most Fascincating People of 2013, pouring her heart out about her four-year relationship with the Hunger Games star, admitting they moved too fast.
"I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year," the Wrecking Ball singer said of her record-breaking 2013.
"I don't ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can't be yourself."
Miley Cyrus Cries After Singing Wrecking Ball
Miley and Liam, 23, broke up in the fall after a rocky 15-month engagement. The former couple met on the Last Song set in June 2009 and got engaged two years later when the chart topper was just 19.
But she did love Liam and doesn't regret their engagement, the pop star told Barbara.
"I don't think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn't change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years," she said.
"But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy. I wait for those moments of silence, when I'm just at my house, by myself."
Since their split, the Australian hunk has been linked to Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez and has remained tight-lipped about his relationship with Miley, as has the usually outspoken singer - until now.
When asked if she ever wants to get married, Miley told Barbara, "I think I'll want that in the time that it needs to be."
After a dramatic year when she was rarely out of the news, the former Disney star made the short list for Time Magazine's Person of the Year, finally losing out to Pope Francis. We are sure Miley isn't too upset though. After all, being branded as one of the most fascinating people of the year by ABC stalwart Barbara Walters is an accolade in itself.
Barbara Walters Presents The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013 airs on ABC this Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 9:30 p.m. EST.
