It looks like fans aren’t the only ones who think it’s odd Kylie Jenner threw her best friend Anastasia Karanikolaou a Handmaid’s Tale themed birthday party recently. Bradley Whitford, who plays Commander Lawrence on the show, wasn’t totally for the 21-year-old’s bash.
“Seems a little tacky,” Bradley, 59, said during an appearance on The Talk on Tuesday, June 11. “That costume is so kind of iconic, and it’s interesting how it’s changed from initially a sort of symbol of oppression — to now, as the show is moving ahead to a symbol of resistance. So, yeah, [a] cocktail party seems to sort of dash all that significance.”
If you’re not familiar with the Hulu series, it’s basically about “a woman [who] is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship,” according to IMBD. Naturally, Ky’s theme upset many because, though it’s just a birthday, it suggests that she’s unaware or simply doesn’t care for what the show represents.
“Am I the only one completely grossed out that Kylie Jenner is throwing a Handmaid’s Tale party Also, am I really surprised?” one fan tweeted. Another person wrote, “Did Kylie really host a Handmaid’s Tale party? Does she know that the narrative is based on handmaids being stripped of humanity, raped and treated like animals? Does she know it’s not a party theme, and that it’s distasteful to treat it like one?”
Kylie hasn’t addressed any of the backlash. Instead, she’s been pretty busy spending time with Stassie and posting photos with her in honor of her 22nd birthday. “Happy birthday to the baddest @stassiebaby. Nine years Iater and you’re still a real one. I love you forever and always,” she captioned a black and white Instagram pic with her childhood pal.
Hopefully, her next party will be better thought out!
