Life & Style sat down with Courtney Sixx, wife of rock star, Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, and got all the details on her day with Kylie Jenner and her new NBC show, HOW-TO GIRL.
1. What inspired you to start How2Girl?
I grew up with a single hard working mom and we were on a tight budget so I had to find creative ways to get the look I wanted without spending a lot. I’ve always loved recreating looks for less since I was a little girl. Now at 30-years-old, I can be found everyday in my How2Girl studio or at home whipping up new fun, fresh and fab DIY projects from entertaining and décor to fashion and beauty showing women how to get the look they want without breaking the bank.
2. You’re currently in development of a new TV series featuring you as Hollywood's How-To-Girl with NBC/Universal. What’s the show about?
Each week I will combine the addiction of DIY with celebrities and me, Tinseltown's favorite How-To-Girl! I will be DIY’ing with Hollywood’s hottest stars helping them make fabulous projects for upcoming events in their lives straight from their homes to their tour buses. Viewers will get a behind the scenes look into their favorite celebrities worlds while learning how to do the same projects at home as they watch some of the most recognizable faces in the world roll up their sleeves and get down and dirty.
3. You recently filmed with Cindy Crawford for your show, what was that like?
I idolized Cindy growing up. Who didn’t? It’s always nice when you meet one of your idols and they turn out to be one of he sweetest, most down to earth and coolest people ever. It was so cool getting behind the scenes scoop from her new New York Times best selling book Becoming Cindy as we picked out her favorite pictures and decoupaged them placing them inside of an antique picture frame for her daughter Kaia’s room. She told me lots of cool stories from each shoot that not a lot of people know. We also made a signature Cindy cocktail with Casamigos, which is her husband Rande Gerber and George Clooney’s tequila company… Let’s just say I got some juicy scoop on George!
4. You taught Kylie Jenner how to throw her first holiday dinner, what was the coolest tip she learned and loved?
It was so much fun showing Kylie my favorite holiday entertaining tips because even though her family throws gorgeous over the top events she is only 18 and just moved into her first house so it was cool helping her dive into hosting. Kylie loved upholstering her seat cushions with faux fur and duck tape! It added so much elegance to the table scape and was so quick and simple to do.
5. How2Girl Radio is the biggest how-to tutorial show on iHeartRadio. What kind of tips and ideas do you give?
Quick 1 to 2 minute tips for the girl on the go. All of these tips are fab yet simple and you don’t need visuals of them like the tutorials I show on my website How2Girl. For example, one of my favorite How2Girl Radio episodes was making your own salon quality deep conditioning treatment by mixing 1 part conditioner and 1 part olive oil together, heating it up in the microwave, applying to wet hair and throwing on a plastic shower cap for 30 minutes. Say hello to gorgeous, shiny and hydrated hair without that hefty salon price tag!
6. You’re married to a rock star, you don’t have to budget so why DIY?
My husband always laughs at me when I refuse to hire people to do things around the house. For example, I have sewn all of the curtains in our entire home. Could we afford to have them made custom for us? Yes, but I truly love driving downtown to my local fabric mart, searching for the perfect color, pattern and texture to go in my desired room. I look forward to getting it home, measuring, pinning, sewing and finally seeing my finished result. There is a certain sense of pride when you put your heart and creativity into something. I genuinely love and enjoy the entire DIY process but with that being said, I don’t have a ton of patience which is why my projects and tutorials are simple and to the point because I lose interest very quickly when things become too time consuming, at that point you may as well just go out and buy whatever it is you’re trying to make.
7. Who would your dream celebrity guest be on your show?
Amy Poehler is so talented and funny, I would love to have her on my show.
8. What would your dream DIY project be?
To make Victoria Secret angel wings and strut down the catwalk in them!
