For the 14th season of Dancing With the Stars, pro dancer Kym Johnson will be sharing the inside scoop with Life & Style readers -- a behind-the-scenes look at the show and the run of her celebrity partner, former Family Matters star Jaleel White! In the sixth week, Kym talks about practicing in the Big Apple, what she thought of Maria Menounos and Derek Hough's smooches and why last week's Dance Duel will help her and Jaleel tonight. Check back every week for more scoop from Kym!
I loved the samba that we did last week. It's always tricky going first because the judges have nothing to compare you with, but I was really happy with our dance. I think Jaleel improved a lot and he attacked that samba! The crowd went wild when Jaleel showed some skin -- he showed a lot more than he has before! To wind up in the bottom two [with a score of three 8s from the judges for a total of 24] was surprising, but it's not that great when everyone's getting 9s and 10s. The competition is incredible. Everyone is doing such an amazing job. It looks like Maria Menounos and Derek Hough had another kiss there! They've got a running theme with their dances so I'm wondering if we're going to see another kiss this week. I'll have to look out for it! I loved all of the dances.
It was a horrible feeling having to do the Dance Duel, which is a new element to the show. The audience votes on Monday and the bottom two teams have to dance off head-to-head on Tuesday night. I'm sure it's exciting for the viewers but it's very nerve-racking for us. We faced Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff. Karina and I were looking at each other going, this is horrible! The guys were actually holding it together a bit better than Karina and I were. It was awful having to stand there and stare your opposition down -- we're going to battle! The whole thing was horrible and it's happening again the next two weeks!

We rehearsed the cha cha for the Dance Duel on Tuesday morning and it was fresh in our mind and at that point we just had to say, okay, let's go, let's do this! The judges voted for us and we got to survive another week.

We took our rehearsals on the road this week, which is always difficult. Jaleel had a lot of press to do for his new show, Total Blackout, and we got to do Andy Cohen's show, Watch What Happens Live, together. That was fun! We rehearsed at a studio near the Empire State Building so we actually got a chance to go up the Empire State Building during a break. We had a little bit of sightseeing during our quick trip! We left Tuesday night and got back Friday. I was showing Jaleel the choreography on the plane, trying to fit as much practice time in as possible.
This week is Motown week -- I love all of that music. It's such a happy time so it's been a really fun week. We have the cha cha, so doing the Dance Duel was a blessing in disguise because now Jaleel is very familiar with the cha cha. It helped us in getting ready for this week. We're going for a real Motown look with our costumes and we have a special guest performing with us. Everyone has someone -- it's an added special bonus! Motown is just a great time. I'm really excited about it!
