Lili Reinhart Details ‘Emotional Few Months’ Following Cole Sprouse Split
Speaking her truth. Lili Reinhart opened up about her split from boyfriend Cole Sprouse after nearly three years of dating. “The last couple of months have probably [been] the most emotional few months of my entire life,” the Riverdale actress, 23, told Refinery29 in an interview published on Tuesday, August 18.
“My therapist [told] me, ‘Your body’s going through withdrawal from love. You’re used to having this exchange of happy chemicals between you and the person that you’re with,’” the Hustlers star, who called it quits with Cole in May, explained. “In moments of my life, I have dropped every ounce of pride that I had just to be like, ‘Love me. Please take the pain away for a day, a second, an hour,’ just so I can feel that fix again.”
Lili described the pain she’s felt this year as a “black tunnel [that] was never going to end,” adding that she “couldn’t see the light.” At times, the Ohio native said she felt like she was dying.
“It was f–king rough, and there’s no other way through it than just through it. I’ve seen a lot of people when it comes to heartache and grief and breakups, and they try to get that void filled with sex, with coke, with food, with drinking, [but] the void is still there,” Lili expressed. “I took the road less traveled and just dealt with my s–t. I had to face my own pain head-on.”
As a means of coping, Lili turned to poetry. While her first collection of poems, Swimming Lessons, will be released in September, the Teen Choice Award winner told Refinery29 her sophomore collection is already finished.
“I felt the need to write that because I was scared — and I am scared — that people are going to try and create their own idea of what my love life looked or looks like,” Lili mused. “I’m not saying, ‘My boyfriend f–ked another woman.’ I’m saying, ‘I felt betrayed.’” Ahead of the pair’s split, speculation that Cole cheated on Lili with model Kaia Gerber began to circulate.
The former Disney Channel star, 28, took to Instagram to set the record straight. “I tolerate a lot of rumors and slander from people online claiming to be my fans. Fans who feel entitled to my privacy precisely because I never indulge them,” Cole began his lengthy post on April 20. “Attacking my friends, baseless accusations, leaking my address and sending death threats are all qualities of insanity and fanaticism.”
Since then, it appears as though both Cole and Lili remain single.
