The Artist has become an Oscar favorite for best picture, but it's unlike any movie that's been nominated since, well, 1928: It's silent (not to mention in black-and-white). It's a clever way to make the story -- about a dashing silent-movie star (French actor Jean Dujardin) eclipsed by an ambitious actress (Bérénice Bejo) who stars in "talkies" -- seem fresh and original. The Artist can feel a little gimmicky at times, but it has charm to spare. -- Dan Jewel
