Even Justin Bieber’s mentor Usher says the teen sensation has some growing up to do.
In a new interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing today, The Voice coach — who’s responsible for the Biebs’ success after discovering him on YouTube — touches upon some of the issues surrounding the star.
“Obviously we’ve been with him the whole way. He seems to be, um, he’s young,” Ellen says to Usher without exactly mentioning the troubles Bieber, 19, has found himself in recently.
“Keyword, you started with ‘young,’” Usher responds. “And I think all of us in some way have humble beginnings that pan out to be incredible and we hope in his transition – as friends and family who have helped him be who he is – that he’ll continue to just mature.”
The hip-hop star, 34, says social media isn’t exactly helping, “there is no privacy and that kind of trial and elimination period is kind of done in front of a camera.”
He didn’t stop there. “It’s been done by many, many other celebrities,” he continues. “They are product of it and some come out bad, and some come out good.”
2013 has proven to be quite interesting for the “Beauty and a Beat” singer — pictures have surfaced of him smoking marijuana, he almost got into a very public physical altercation with a photographer in London and he’s shown up nearly two hours late to a concert. Not to mention, getting booed in front of his ex Selena Gomez at the Billboard Awards.
And according to recent reports, he’s currently being investigated for reckless driving after complaints about alleged speeding in the Calabasas, Calif. community where he resides.
But Usher is hoping for the best. “I don’t look at it as a negative though,” he says. “I look at it as a teenager. [Justin is] a teenager having to live his life in front of a camera.”
Despite both their busy schedules, the “Let It Burn” singer says he makes sure to keep in touch with Justin. He revealed, “Obviously when I can be of help, I do so. Reach out and stay connected.”
