John Mayer's brief relationship with Taylor Swift is the gift that keeps on giving. The singer was asked on the Today show this morning whether his new song, "Paper Doll," is about his ex-girlfriend.
There have been rumors that his song is in response to the country star's 2010 tune "Dear John."
Taylor Swift & Selena Gomez: BFFs Forever
"There's been some speculation from the press that it might be about someone," co-host Willie Geist said, without mentioning Taylor's name. "True or false?"
"Yeah, songwriters write songs because of people, about people," the 35-year-old replied. "Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don't get involved with [it]. It's none of my business."
In "Paper Dolls," fans believe that John's referring to Taylor's hit single, "22" in this lyric: "You're like 22 girls in one / And none of them know what they're running from."
Katy Perry's Dating Rules for John Mayer
John, who's now dating Katy Perry, spoke about Taylor's song in an interview with Rolling Stone last year, referring to it as "cheap songwriting."
"It was a really lousy thing to do," he said. "It really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down."
