There's always one contestant who messes up during the interview round of the Miss USA pageant, and this year's social media laughingstock was Miss California, Nadia Mejia.
The 20-year-old, who made it to the Top 5, was asked by judge Nigel Barker, “One of the biggest challenges facing the United States is social and economic inequality. How do we narrow the gap between the rich and poor?” And her nervous answer failed to impress.

After taking a second to compose herself, Mejia said, “When it comes to social and economic inequality, I think that the rich and the poor need to stop being so segregated. I think there is a middle class. I think that the rich need to…”
At that moment, she closed her eyes and took a deep breathing, seeming to understand that she wasn't making much sense.

“I think that the rich need to be able to be giving, and I think the poor need to work hard. And I think the middle class need to come together and find an in between," she concluded.
Unfortunately, the awkward response got the brunette beauty eliminated from the competition. Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber, ultimately took home the crown.

Despite the embarrassment, Mejia joked about the goof after the competition. "When you pray to God for the words to social economic inequality and his response is 'It'll take longer than 30 seconds to answer that babe,'" she wrote on Instagram.
