Life & Style chatted with David Parnes from Millionaire Listing LA — check out the interview below.
Q: So you’re actually from England?
A: I am from London originally.
Q: Where in London?
A: Now I am from LA darling……I was born and raised in Hampton which is the north London and as I grew up I moved to the west end, Chelsea and then I moved to LA.
Q: Tell me how you got into real estate and how you made it to the top.
A: I was doing real estate in England actually, I went to university to learn, I worked for furniture shop for a year and I started to work for a private investor to accumulate a portfolio of commercial buildings in Europe, Germany and Poland and that was just before the credit crisis and the credit crisis hit, and that was a big problem basically and I think I was just turned 26 and got completely wiped out and really badly and how law suits and everything and I eventually moved to LA to be with James who had moved here with his father six years prior. Our first listing was an $867,000 duplex in Hollywood we bought in 2011 and that we fixed up and sold for $1.7 million in 2012. And that was really the key to access the money we needed to be able to build our business and brand ourselves and really market the business.

Q: How is this season different from the other seasons of Million Dollar Listing LA? We'd love some highlights?
A: Well I think that our partnership definitely got tested and we were able to overcome it. We did some amazing deals and definitely had some disagreements but we are always able to come together. There were definitely some personal issues, family issues that you will get to see. Lots of organic drama. There is a lot of pressure and disagreements and high stakes and it creates the recipe for drama. Some really big deals. It will definitely be an exciting season.
Q: What is the secret to your success on Million Dollar Listing LA?
A: I think just being yourself. It is a hard thing to have cameras with you at first. And you just have to get used to it. But you have to just be yourself. And you let your vulnerable side out. We are human beings at the end of the day, with real feelings and real emotions. We are not robots. We work 11-12 months of the year with cameras basically in your face so you kind of learn to forget they are there and go about your business.
Q: You were voted most handsome and best dressed of the MDL franchise. Who are some of your favorite designer’s? Do you dress yourself or is someone dressing you?
A: I dress myself. I really like Theory, Tom Ford is great. Custom suits. I really like Hermes for my ties. I will wear a high street brand and accessorize it.
Q: What are some of the restaurants you frequent in LA?
A: I really like Providence at Melrose. It is a really good, I will eat a 12 course meal no problem. It is like appetizer size. I also like Wally’s in Beverly Hills. They have really clean, good food and the dishes are pretty cool. They have great staff. And for breakfast I might do Checconis in Hollywood. I like their truffle burger. My fiancé is Persian-Armenian so we eat a lot of barbecue. It is all about the kabob. We use charcoal because it just makes it taste better and we marinate the meat and put the skewers on the barbecue, it is so good it is hard to find a restaurant that makes it as good. And we eat a lot of salad. She makes a really, really good salad.
Q: What is the hot amenity to have right now and the craziest amenity you have ever seen?
A: Of course you have the bowling alleys and the wine cellars, multiple pools are hot. Having 3-4 pools. There is a new 100,000 square foot house in Bel Air with beautiful, panoramic views that has five pools. It is really amazing. And you know some people have hair salons, movie theaters and stuff like that. But, the hottest new amenity I think is a night club. We have one house that literally has a full functioning, 5,000 square foot night club with a separate entrance over on Carol in Beverly Hills. I think that is becoming a thing now. The craziest I have seen was a house is a surgery room. That was pretty crazy.
Q: What can we expect to see for you and James on the show this season?
A: Well you will see me and James have some arguments. We really have our friendship tested and are really divided over a listing and we just have a big disagreement and at one point I never thought we would make it. And you see some family drama, illnesses and disagreements. You will just have to watch and see what happens.
Q: Who buys something like the multimillion dollar homes you sell and how do they pay?
A: At $40 million you are looking at billionaires. International business men, investors, 90% of the time at that level they will pay all cash.
Q: Can anyone who wants to sell their home in the area contact you guys?
A: Yes, absolutely. They can call the office or email us and we would be happy to help.
Check out the premiere of the show tonight on Bravo at 9pm.
